Marissa Peterson, Whatcom Birth Doula and CBE

about me

Some people start in birth work because they had a great experience, and some start because they had a negative experience; I was the former. I got started in birth work because of my own amazing births. I had two births of my own, and knew from the support that we received from our midwife and doula that I wanted to facilitate that experience with other people as well. I took a training after my second was born, and never looked back. I love reading and listening to podcasts centered around birth. This knowledge and passion has led me down the path of midwifery, and I hope to be able to support people in this way in the future. Knowledge and support and trust are truly the foundations to birth, and I bring this with me when I support people as a doula and sister.

my approach

The first births we attend are often our own. And we love to talk about how birth is natural, and that its within ourselves to discover our power and intuition. But we're so far removed from birth, and most of those around us are as well. Having someone in your corner who isn’t removed from birth and has seen the struggles, fears, power, and joy that birth brings can provide the support you need to have the birthing experience you desire and deserve.

As a doula and birthworker, I walk alongside you and support you. There are not enough people out there who actually listen to us; including other birth workers. I strive to be a person during your pregnancy and birth that actually sees you, and wants what you want. I’m not someone who wants an outcome, or to please a provider. I want to center YOU. I listen, hear and see you through the struggles and fears so that you are supported and constantly reminded of your strength and ability to birth.

my experience

I've trained with DONA, ProDoula, Birthing Advocacy and completed Birth Story Medicine Training. I’ve also learned an incredible amount from listening to other birth professionals via podcasts, reading books they've written, and being in community with birth workers in our area. I learn so much from the women I've supported and births I’ve attended, hearing the stories from women/birthing folks in our community via my podcast, as well as my own birthing experiences.

"My husband and I had the pleasure to work with Marissa for Childbirth Classes in the comfort of our own home. She helped ease all of our anxieties, she has so much knowledge, and we feel fully prepared for what's to come during our labor and delivery journey. She truly is a gem. Anybody seeking a Doula should go with Marissa.”
